West Bengal covers the
bottleneck of the India in the east stretching from the
Himalayas in the north to the Bay of Bengal in the South. The
state has two natural divisions, the Himalalyan north and the
alluvial plan of south consisting of many big rivers-the chief
of which are the Bhagirathi and its tributaries.
The state has produced men and
women whose ideas helped to in shape modern India. Ram Mohan
Roy, Ramakrishana, Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar and Vivekananda
spear headed social and religious movemonts. Bankkinchandra
Chatterjee,Madhusudan Dutta, Rabindranath Tagore among others
ushered in an area of new literature. A movement to evolve a
ture “Indian art from” found its experssions in
Gagaanendranath Tagore, Abaindranath Tagore, Nanlal Bose,
Jamini Roy and others. Proscenium theatre came in to he
country with Satyajit Roy’s “Pather Panchaji”. It has produced
great freedom fighters like Sir Suren Banerjee. C.R. Das,
Netaji Subash Chandra Bose and Maulana Azad. This land also
gave us four Nobel Laurates-Rabindranath Tagore, C.V.Ramman,
Ronald Ross and Mother Teresa.
The state seldom sees a dull
moment Sheltered by searing Himalayan Peaks and sun-drenched
beaches the land also has the luuxuriant tropical jungles and
is home of the royal Bengal tiger Shantiniketan, the abode, is
a full-fledged university.
