Banswara
is situated in 23°3’N and 74°27’E and famous for some of its
historical and architectural monuments. There are some temples
and palaces of worship which draw pilgrims from far and wide.
The scenic beauty and the lush green surrondings also attracts
the attention of the visiting tourists. Home to the tribals
with Bhil constituting half of the total population.
The
town is said to have been founded by jagmal, the first chief
of the erstwhile state of Banswara and was named after a Bhil,
Vasna or Banswara whom he defeated and killed. Some old ruins
on the top of a hill about 3 km. south of the town are said to
be the remains of a palace built by jagmal. After the
accessions of jagmal it remained the capital of the erstwhile
state of Banswara for a period of about four centuries.
The
old town is surrounded by a stone wall which is in a
dilapidated condition at several places. The new habitation
has sprung up outside the periphery of the wall. Overlooking
the town stands the palaces of the formar rulers of Banswara.
Still owned by Royal family the palace of spreads in a big
aera on the top in between the city. It can be visited on
invitation.
