Bharatpur,
yet another gateway to Rajasthan is famous for
its world heritage listed bird sanctuary, the ‘Keoladeo Ghana
National Park’, one of the finest bird sanctuaries in
existence.
Bharatpur city situated in 27°13’N and 77°30’E is the main
railway lines of western railway. The city and the fort are
said to have been founded about 269 years ago by Rustam, a Jat
of the Sogariya clan. In 1733, Maharaja Surajmal took it from
khem Karan, the son of Rustam, and improved it by constructing
a big fort, and the earthen wall around the city.
According to the local traditons, it was named Bharatpur after
the named of Bharat, the brother of Lord Rama of Ayodhya whose
other brother Laxman was worshipped as the family deity of
Bharatpur rulers and whose name was engraved of the state arms
and seals.
Bharatpur city is
situated at a height of 204 meters above sea level. The town
was once surrounded by a 11 km long city wall on all sides and
can be approached through eleven gates.
