Jodhpur
stands at the edge of the Thar Desert and is the largest city
in Rajasthan after Jaipur. Once the capital of the Marwar
state, it was founded in 1459 A.D. by Rao Jodha- chief of the
Rathore clan of Rajputs. It is located at the base of a
hillock the top of which is crowned by an old fort which also
houses the Palaces of the former rulers of Jodhpur.
The
city is situated between latitude 26°18’N and longitude 73°1’
E, and a population of 317,612 in 1971. The old city is
surrounded by a well which has crumbled down at many palaces.
There are several gates to enter the old city, such as the
Nagauri gate, Merta gate, Sojati gate, Jalori gate, Siwanchi
gate and Chandpole gate. Formerly the city was confined to the
old walls but with the development of new colonies like
Sardarpura, Manoharpura, Paota, Ratanada the city has grown
out of the walls. While the graceful palaces, forts and
temples strewn throughout the city bring alive the historic
grandeur, exquisite handicrafts, flok dance, music and
brightly attired people lend a romantic aura to the city.
