Udaipur
‘The
city of Lakes’ is one of the most romantic and beautful cities
of Rajasthan. The capital of the erstwhile Mewar or Udaipur
state and presently the headquarters of the district
administration, Udaipur was founded by Rana Udai Singh about
1559 A.D. and which acquired its name after him. It is lies in
24°31’north latitudes and 73°42’ east longitudes.
The
old city is picturesquely situated on the slope of a low
ridge, the summit of which is crowned by the former Maharna’s
palaces. To the north and west the houses extend to the bank
of a beautiful sheet of water know as the Pichola lake. The
city was formerly surrounede by a well which circular bastions
at intervals, except on the west where it rested on the lake
and there were eleven gates leading to the city, the principal
being the Chand Pol
at the
northwest corner, the Hathi Pol on the north, the Delhi gate
on the north-east, the Suraj Pol on the east and the Kishan
Pol on the south.
Udaipur is the jewel of Mewar – a Kingdom ruled by the
Sisodiya dynasty for 1200 years. Udaipur not only boasts a
chivalrous past but aslo takes pride in its heritage, as a
centre for performaing arts, painting, crafts, culture and
traditions. The marvellous architecture of its palaces,
temples, haveils and gardens lining the shores of the lakes
are spell binding.
Udaipur is an season destination, due to its pleasent climate
throughout the year.
